Before you flame me, please know that I have been reading and searching as much about tires on stock rims on this site, and elsewhere, as I could.
Right now, I am leaning toward buying the Dunlop GT qualifiers, and wanted to know if anyone might have pics of these tires on their MKII. I would be putting the 235x60x14's on the stock P Type rims. The only post I saw that gave me some pause about the wider tire was that someone reported slower acceleration. I am guessing it could not be too severe though.
The only other cost effective (for me) option I see is the Avid ST's. I have heard some not so good things about them, but some seem to like them. However, they are only avail in the 225 size, and I would like to get a bit wider than stock.
Thanks,
Mike

the gt qualifier is a good tire for a few months, after about 3\4 tread they suk. the avid st has stuck in corners where no tire should stick.

With that small of a difference, 225/235, you probably won't even notice it.
The 235 60s get a little tall for my taste, the 225s look just fine and perform probably just as well, I'd insert a commercial for the Radial T/A's with the white letters out but we've all heard that enough I'm sure...

First off, thanks to everyone for the responses. It sounds like either tire would do.
Eric, are you saying you would get something more along the lines of 235x50, 235x40 or lower? That is what I am guessing you mean by the 60's getting a little tall. I would like to get something a bit more low profile, but worried it might jack with my spedo too much. I have enough troubles with the law when my spedo works properly. :)
Thanks,
Mike

Personally.....
Dunlop Qualifier GT's. Where do you live??? In a area where it rains allot in the crappy weather season??? The GT Qualifier's are HORRIBLE in the rain!!! The Yoko Avid S/T's would be a better choice for rain.
The 235/60's I noticed accelerated a bit slower than the 225/60's, at least for me. Had on a set of Goodyear Eagle ST's in 235/60's years ago. Then switched to BFG Radial TA's in the 225/60's. Acceleration improved.
Up to you for choices.

If I recall correctly, these are 235/60/14 Winston Tires

After a few years, they finally decided to explode going down the highway. Note to all, if your tires have cracks in the side from age, replace them.

I have to agree with the professor.. The qualifiers really hate the rain..They let go with no warning at all.. :runaway:  :censored: Im running 235-60-14 qualifiers on my 83 p-type..They hold superbly in dry conditions and so far only show bad sighns of where from useing them as drag tires for 2 months..Check out the site on my sig and you can check them out..

Here are a couple of pics of my 235/60 qualifiers. I've only put 2k kms on them and i like them alot but i wish i had chosen 225's instead, the sidewalls look larger than the pics seem to show. I haven't experienced any problems in the rain yet but on dry roads they stick really well.

Thanks again for the replies / info.
Prof, I live in Austin TX. We don't have too many horrible weather days. But, when it does rain, I always drive my primary car (Maxima). I try and never get the "Supress" in the rain given their horrible reps for rust.
935, good advice. That is actually one of the reasons I am getting some new tires. Two of them are very old. Not to mention, they are all 205x70x14's which don't look good at all. Thanks to the previous owner for that one. Otherwise, the car looks better than I could have expected.
Chris, thanks for the link. I am still trying to check it out, but CarDomain seems to be all jacked up right now. You know how it is when many people are looking at their site, they just shut off new traffic. Drove me nuts when I was setting up my page(s) there. I will definitely go back and check it out though. Nothing beats being able to actually see the tires on the same type of car before buying.
Which segues nicely into me thanking you Foster for posting the pics. I think they look pretty good. I have been wrestling with whether or not to hide or expose the lettering. The sidewall is probably higher than I would want, but like I mentioned earlier, right now I'm sporting 70 sidewalls. So they will look a bit better I guess.
I think I will go with the Dunlops since I do not plan on driving the car in inclement weather. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much better the car will look with the new rubber. Not to mention, how much better it will ride.
Next, I will need to replace at least one strut. So figure I will probably replace them all. Will do some searching on that, but any suggestions would be cool too.
Thanks again,
Mike

---Sorry I didn't clarify...that's what I meant. As far as the speedo concerns, 235/60s will already throw you off and read slow - you could go with 245/50r14s which i think are pretty close to the stock sidewall heights I think. They are going to cost more though.
As far as the struts, I think KYB's work well with the stock springs, Tokico's with Eibachs or other aftermarket spring choices. There's a lot of info and opinions in the Brakes and Suspension section.

Thanks Eric. I will pour through the brakes/susp section and see what folks have to say. I think I will probably stick with the stock springs for now. I really would prefer to save up for the 6M upgrade. Probably have to get it before inspection next Feb. I don't want to spend a bunch of money to get the issues I have with the current (orig) motor fixed before facing the new tough emissions here (TX.).

Umm, 245/50/14's are equal in sidewall height to 205/60/14's at about 123 mm, so considerably smaller than stock 225/60's at 135 mm wheel to tread. 245/50's are great for quicker acceleration and look awesome, but the 235/60's will help with the gas mileage. I'm running 245/60's on the back right now since I'm doing so much highway driving.

Hey Lechner, I am actually not very concerned with gas milage since this is a secondary vehicle driven stickly for fun. So if it came down to it, whatever looks best on the stock P type rims and still drives good, would win. Just figuring that out is the hard part.
What I have on there right now are 205x70x14's. The sidewalls are WAY too big for my liking. Not to mention the tires are too skinny. And although I have not seen the stock size tires on a MKII since i was in high school, I remember the sidewalls not looking near as big as mine do right now.
Is there going to be a difference in the size of the sidewalls between 225x60 and 235x60? That sounds like a stupid question as I read it, given that the size indication for both is "60". But some of the previous posts have made me think that the sidewalls on the 235x60's might look bigger than the 225x60's. Maybe because of how the tire will stretch out, I dunno. Oh, and obviously a tire expert I am not.
Thanks,
Mike

---Should have done the math there I guess...a thousand apologies.
The 235/60s will be taller than the 225/60s, the height of the sidewall would be 60% of 235mm instead of 60% of 225mm.

Mike, from what you are telling me I can see you will not be happy with 235/60/14, since they are barely any smaller in sidewall than 205/70/14's, just wider. You will be happiest with 245/50/14's if you can find them. You will be going a little slower than what your speedo says, which should help keep you out of trouble rather than get you in it. If you can't find/afford those, then get the AVID S/T's.

Eric, thanks so much for your snippet "the height of the sidewall would be 60% of 235mm instead of 60% ". Now I understand what the "60" in "235x60x14" means. I knew it was the size of the sidewall, but did not know they arrived at that number by taking the percentage of the width. Wonder why they just don't say 60 means 60mm or something. Anyway, thanks for the schooling.
Lechner, I think I will just go with the Avid ST's. That was my original intent, and the price is definitely right. I don't think I can spend the extra on the 245x50x14's even though I am sure it would make the car look the best. Heck, anything will look better than the mish-mash of non-stock spec junk I have on there right now.
Thanks again to everyone who responded.
Cheers,
Mike

PS - if anyone has any pics of their MKII with the Avid's I would love to see them. I searched the forum for quite a while some time back looking for some but came up empty.
Cheers,
Mike
