Not sure if anyone on here has seen this, but Rota has finally come through on a wide, decent offset, sweet looking wheel. I've personally always liked what Rota has done, but this is the first time they have come through for the RWD guys(other than the TE-replica in 16" only). I got rid of my S14 awhile back and drive an MR2 turbo now, and while on the MR2 boards(MR2OC) I came across this post:

http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=124982

We are running a group buy for the all new Rota D2 wheel (SSR Professor SP1 replica). Rota is introducing this wheel as SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. This means Rota will not be stocking it so in order to get this wheel you will have to order through a dealer and wait approximately 1.5 months from the time the order is put in. The wheel will be available in the below configurations:

Sizes
17x7.5- $160 each
17x8- $170 each
17x8.5- $175 each

I found this over at silvia forums and it pretty cheap
maybe we can get a similar groupbuy if people are interested in these rims but the offset is not exactly ideal

Might be the lowest offset they can do (+20).
Perfect for an L type though.

Good deal. I wish the offsets were better though.

The dealer is trying to persuade Rota to make lower offset and wider tires. I believe this are new RIMS and the group buy he is having at silvia forums is a preorder. The widest is 8.5 and lowest offset is +20 (only for this dealer)

I'm with you on this one Raj, better offsets would help.

0 offset on the 7.5's and a -10-15 on the 8.5's would look fat.

Nice find.. Rota supplies quite a variety of designs with high offsets.. I wonder if the 17x8.5 + 20 would work ok as the fronts may be close to the strut.. Gunmetal with polished lips would look pretty nice.. Please keep up updated - this could be my next set of wheels...Jay B in AZ

At the moment Rota makes the...

Rota D2 in 17s only and lowest offset is +20

Rota Grid in 16x8 only with +10 offset
http://www3.telus.net/pingsam/K/rotagrid.jpg

...I have contacted ROTA and here is the email they gave me

you will have to course this order through our office in the USA... as of now we have the D2 in 17... we are still evaluating the possibility of making other sizes... please call our office so we can consolidate your requests from the USA and have the specs produced if we generate enough interest...

Wish me luck!

+10 in both 7.5 and 8.5 wide wouldnt look bad at all. but 0 would look better.

That's not a bad find at all KCHENG. Actually with wheel supplies dwindling, that's a GREAT find! :good: I would love to see those on a mk2.

so a 17x8.5 +10 offset would really need spacers in the rear ?

And if so how much ?

The front in a 17x8 +10 isnt to bad so would it be ok ?

I am just thinking if +10 is all they end up making how could you fit the two rims I mentioned on the car, and is it even worth the effort ?

Wheel manufacturers are pretty much set in the 'non custom' wheels.
Basically, Rota is stating a 'maximum' limit they would build an existing design when it comes to offset.

Either cough up the $$ for custom made wheels, find 'old school' wheels and restore them, or use an adapter to get the offset you like in the rear. So when you ask, is it even worth the effort, consider your other options to not run the wheels that came with the car.

By the way, 'old school' wheels of the right offset for the most part would be 14-16", with the 16" rims being really hard to find these days.

We've also sold a few of those Rota D2's. At the moment they don't have plans to do lower offset, but like always, they could make pretty much any wheel so long as they have 5 sets prepaid (20 wheels). The wheels could be staggered, but all 5 people would have to agree on the same size...

I am looking for rims and will be ready to buy in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

So does a group buy need to be done here ?

If they will do zero offset then that sounds like a winner to me, of course as long as 20 rims are ordered.

I would like 17x8 in the front and 17x8.5 in the rear, with I would think 0 offset.

Anyone else think this could fly ?

BTW, they look sweet on that MK4.

Can anyone photochop these on a MK2 ?

lowest they are willing to do is +10 and that will take some time for them to do according to what they told me, but im still spamming them to do 0 offset for us!

does the z-boys, celica gt, and maybe the ae86 guys know about this group buy? The more the merrier for a better deal. Im sort of interested in participating. Its between these or centerline saharas.

I know I want a set but I want some 17x9.5 for the rears :)

what kinda spacer is needed for a +10 offset? or will it work with out one?

17x9.5's +10 would work without a spacer.
It's been documented (centerlines) that 17x9.5 0 works without rubbing the flare.
The question then becomes is the cost of a pair of 10mm spacers and eight longer studs worth the 1/3 of an inch for looks?
