just a heads up, many of the folks here would rather stick a red-hot poker in their eye than to go to supraforums, others, they just don't have an account there and since the 'public view' nazis stepped in those who don't have an account can't see.

Awesome project!

Very nice. Very similar to the set up I'm building up. Mine's already in and running, but still on the stock twins and I'm saving for injectors and the turbo. I have pretty much everything else for the single turbo swap :)

Nice to see someone else doing something like me :)

Dropping in a getrag wont work.
It will require some serious work to get the mother in, besides trying to get a hold of the gearbox in the first place.
Most likely the old tunnel will need to be cut out, and another welding in, probably from a jza80

Both Norbie and myself are planning on doing the same, Norbie has had his gearbox for sometime now, but still hasnt had the time to do it.

Until then, no one has done it yet, so no one knows quite what to expect.

I also vote for a new camera too :p

well i have the gear box also... and as for making it fit what ever needs 2 be done i can do it.. my philosophe is if it doesnt fit make it fit or when it dout torch it out... theres nothing a good sledge hammer, a nice set of torches, and a welder cant do

what problems were you and norbie running into? i always thought that it would be a pretty sizeable and expensive project, but would fit.

from what i can tell after helping on an auto-6spd swap on a buddy's mk4 and from putting in the r154 in the mk2, ithe getrag should fit after shortening the shifter linkage and bracket with some tunnel work of course. it's not as simple as just banging the tunnel out wider (that actually might not even have to be done)... it looks like you'd have to make a "hump" in the back of the tunnel for the shifter bracket.

actually, you can buy from toyota the tunnel piece for the mk4 that has the hump shaped in. i don't think it's that expensive either, like $80 or so if i remember correctly. this is the piece: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/auto_to_6spd_swap/subtunnel/index.html

maybe you can trim that piece up, cut a hole in the mk2 tunnel so this trimmed piece fits snugly, and weld or bolt + liquid nails it. that's what mk4 guys do when swapping from auto to 6spd and it works really well. the liquid nails seals it up pretty well-- no extra road noise whatsoever

line it up closer to the front of the car so the shifter hole isn't too far back and i always thought it would work just fine.

the only thing i can think of is the getrag's bellhousing _seemed_ a bit bulkier than a 1jz r154 bell... if that is the case some hammering or mounting the motor/trans a little lower and more forward should settle the issue.

i really don't like the r154. i say put the getrag in!!

Im still waiting to find my gearbox/motor combo, so dont have exact sizing details on hand. But yeah, it does seem the shifer location is slightly different from r154/w58. I was planning on using the mk4 tunnel, so def. take a look at gettin it ordered.

Norbie AFAIK is waiting for a chance to take his car off the road and attempt fitting it. There is a tonne of room to work with, so its not a chance if will it fit, but how much fucking about to get it to :p

By the sounds, makipsee will be the first to do it. Get better camera and show us your works!!!! :p

so what does a good 2jz-t or tt swap run anyway? i dont even have a clue as to how much the motor runs.

makipsee
04-19-2006, 03:20 PM
the motor i have is a JDM spec and it came with TT, harness, ecu, and a auto trans and cost me 2200 shipped from Osaka motor sports.. there r a few down falls 2 the JDM spec engine.. intake cam is smaller, the turbos blow apart at about 18 psi, and injectors r smaller...i think thats it but a plus 2 it is that theres no emissions on it and it runs off a MAP sensor rather then a MAF... if im correct

pituala
04-19-2006, 03:29 PM
I also heard one of them (can't remember which) comes with the CT12B turbos, I think that's the JDM one, and I think I heard the USDM one comes with CT20B turbos.

makipsee
04-19-2006, 06:52 PM
im not sure of then one either... the USDM turbos or slightly bigger and made of steel and the JDM's r ceramic and i think a little smaller... im not sure about the sizes but the impellers i know for sure

Norbie

US-spec turbos are CT12B and have steel wheels.

JDM turbos are CT20A and have ceramic wheels.

Despite popular opinion, the CT20A is actually slightly larger but has a different wheel trim, so out of the box the CT12B appears to flow more but when high-flowed the CT20A comes out on top.

Also there are quite a few people on supraforums.com.au running more than 18psi on their ceramic turbos without problems. It's a known fact that 1JZ turbos are very fragile at higher boost, but the 2JZ turbos don't suffer the same problem.

o ok i wasnt sure b/c i read on SF that the JDMs r only good up to 18.. o well i already have my 63mm baby monster

Yeah, that really sucks cause I've been watching a guy with a 1J in a 240SX boosting 17-18psi, and I'm at 16psi now, and want to try 17psi a couple times at the track only with a mix of race gas. The guy in the 240 says he's been pushing that for a while now on his auto 1J with no problems and he's running 12.65 @ 116!!! with a 2.0 or 2.1 (can't remember) 60' time. So if I can cut low 1.9 60' times and trap as high as him, I should be able to pull a 12.4 or 12.5!

I'm about to start the same conversion except with a T51R. I'm also planning on the 6 speed. Be sure to take lots of pics. I'm very interested to see the work involved with fitting the box.
