View Full Version : Nicest wheels?

Who do you all think has the nicest wheels?

I think Malloy's are the best, tho Silvermk2 is a close second.

Bob,

I think it's a 4-way tie here.

Malloy & his Simmons OM's.

Silvermk2 (Aaron Ingles) and his Epsilons, especially if you want the REAL authentic old school 80's look. 8)

GRAZOR (James Razor) and his Racing Hart C2's. New school look with that custom offset (can't get RH C2's w/ a zero offset off the shelf here in the US, he had to custom order them from Japan just for that zero offset, and it was a ~4 - 6 month wait). See below for picture.

http://www.angelfire.com/me3/ic2/images/Toyota_Supra_115.jpg

Uhmmm..... ANYBODY w/ the Compomotive CXN's (Myself, Phil Dupler, Bob Sully, Archie Bowles & I "think" Jim King. Can't remember who else bought them). New school rims, with that old school look.

Oh..thats right! I forgot about the Compomotives... Those are deinfately sweet too.

and while I agree GRAZOR's rims are nice, they are a little too open for my personal tastes..but thats just me. I think we don't have enough caliper to fill in behind it and look good. Just my opinion tho ;)

Sadly, unless someone is selling a set of rims uber cheap, I think I am just gonna get my stockers powder coated gunmetal and call it good enough for now...

For stock wheels, I'd say dean anderson's are way up there, with the time he spent on them it shows.

Don't forget Don Cs HREs or Ophirs Forgelines. My vote for best stock wheels goes to Don Lew. The reason, he now has my old polished stockers. Here is an old photo of them; http://www.pbase.com/image/14292874

Don also wins the most wheels award for sure :) . Eventually I'm going to be getting a new set. I've always loved the HRE 540s, but I've been starting to eyeball the Fikse FM/5 and HRE 545 also. I want to get a wheel that fits the BBK without a spacer eventually.

Malloy
03-14-2003, 01:57 PM
With all due respect, I had 2 sets of mirror polished stock wheels. 1 with the machine lines, 1 without. They are pretty common ;)

I love the FM5, but I really can not see it on a mk2. I have yet to see a 5spoke wheel on a mk2 that made me stop and admire. On the other hand, I bet the 540R would look phenominal.

Hey Mike, my 5 spoke Hayshis should do the trick....

http://www.pbase.com/image/4691357

You have to see them in person to truely appreciate them Not the biggest lip in the world but the 15x8 rears have a little bigger lip. Gorgeous rims and the style totaly suits the mk2. I'll have these mounted on my 85 with Dunlop 245/50-15 SP8000s in a month or so. These are my show and autox rims, wait till you see my new around town beater rims

I should have something new to show very soon. We are placing our Braid order next week. Should look awesome with the BBK and Wilwood calipers. By the way, there will be a custom mk2 surprise on the wheels.

How the heck do you guys post pics. I am trying to copy in the pic of my new wheel but can't seem to do it.

The only problem with HREs is that they're way too heavy from what I've read.

You can get a similar wheel (the FM/10) to the 540R from Fikse and have a nice, lighter wheel. :) JMO.

They're both expensive as hell. :)

Malloy
03-14-2003, 08:28 PM
Dunno wtf I was on earlier, but I totally forgot the FM10. THAT is one of 2 best wheels of all time in my book ;)

HREs are heavy...but lets face it...95% of cars you see with aftermarket wheels, 100hp or 900hp really arent raced...they are street cruisers, and bragging rights. The extra 5lbs at each corner wont really have any real world effect.

Also, people with pretty Fikse wheels typically take them off for more race wheels like CCW etc. So, are they race wheels? hehe

quick
03-14-2003, 09:03 PM
True. True. The only people who I can see that would run Fikse's for race are sponsored up the wazoo.

RE: bling -- again true. I suspect the most you'd be running for race would be 17s... dunno.

Malibyte

Best looking 5-spoke wheels I've seen on a MkII have to be the HREs on Don Culbertson's car. Sweet.

I love the FM5, but I really can not see it on a mk2. I have yet to see a 5spoke wheel on a mk2 that made me stop and admire. On the other hand, I bet the 540R would look phenominal.

The only thing I worry about on the 540 is that the style is too "new" for the Mk2, I love the 540 style wheel though. I think a fairly simple 5 spoke would look really good on a Mk2. The problem with most I've seen on Mk2s are that the spoke pattern is flat. I think that the HRE 545 would look great and I have the brakes to fill them;

http://hre.adversoft.com/wheels/images/ENLARGE/enlarge-545.jpg

I generally haven't cared much for Fikse wheels I've seen, they are pretty popular with the Vette guys around here. I do think the FM5 would look sharp on my silver Mk2. The aren't a very flashy wheel, but neither is the car.

I don't think you can get the Panasports in 16x8s, at least not the cast ones in 0ish offset. This is what I've heard from the Z guys. You have to get 16x7s which weigh 17lbs according to the wheel weight site Mike just posted.

I go down to the local jap import place to look at a set of 16s that they had
and wasn't impressed, but I saw a MR2 with a wonderful set of rims, but
alas, MR2s are 5 lug. I told the guy how I wanted rims that looked like
that for my MKII, and he said that they came OFF a MKII Supra. I said
excuse me? and he said yeah, they'll fit. This rims have two bolt patterns
and sure enough they fit my MKII, and didn't rub or have clearance
problems. I have an "L" Type, and they supposedly came off an "L" Type
they are 23mm offset. I asked him how much he wanted. he said he
couldn't take less than... sit down now... $600 with the new tires. I said
ok, and forked over the cash. one of the rims is badly damaged, but it
came with another rim that looks very close but not exact. once I get
the damaged rim fixxed, I'll have a nice set, and the one that looks close
will become my spare.

and the best part of all:
17x7.5 fronts
17x8.5 backs

well, i personally think my 16x7 enkie 92's are pretty damn nice. they are authentic "old school" and only weigh 16lbs each. now, i may end up with a set of 15x7 ARE mesh wheels as well with a 0 offset. i found them at a local z shop for my freind and he is doing nothing with the car. he is talking about selling them and if so i got first dibs. cant pass up a set of rims like that for $150 or less(yes, i found them and they only cost him $150)

Yes, I had to sent them back to introforged which is taking forever. One wheel has arrived back last week which was sent back by return post as i would not accept the last two, and I sent the other two back by air but that was on January 9 so I dont know where they are. Intro are going to alter the bolt pattern by flooding the holes and re-drilling them.

Thanks Mike:) They will be black soon, don't worry, haha. Things certainly changed, and I will not drive that car to get gas with them yellow now-a-days:O

As soon as my newer turbo goes on the mk3, I'll drive it a few days here and there, and I will finally start to take apart the running working girlfriends dented 87t in my backyard. I already moved the mk2 into the prime working spot in the garage. Shes sitting on a set of whipped parts car mk2 wheels for a while waiting for my busy ass. Looking pretty, and begging me to touch her everytime I step into the garage.

I know I have been "gone" for a few years now, but things will change. mk3 is mostly done with a few parts sitting on the pool table waiting for free time. The A8 is done until next spring ( coil overs are the only things left for that car).

My love for my mk2 has never faded. My free time did. I can only be devoted to one project at a time and with the cars I have/had, it became low on the priority list. She has moved up finally. I have many things out of the way now, and she (mk2) comes after the newest turbo upgrade on the mk3, so I can use my current mk3 turbo in my mk2. I do need to strip the light blue 87t as well, but that will go quickly.

Blah blah blah. Just feel like I need to vent. I used to be pretty active on the mk2 list, and to all my past freinds, Hello again. I'll be back around soon.

Hope all is well in the home, and the driveway,

First time I've ever seen those on an MKII. Good looking! Simmons makes some nice wheels!

OK, time for me to brag a bit

Currently have a set of 16x8" B45 Simmons running +25 offset (these will become track rims running 225/50 sticky tyres) ;

My new mags - 17x8" CSA Gladiators running +6 offset. These will have 235/45 tyres

Those with a keen eye and reading of other threads will also note that I have done a bit of a brake upgrade and 5 stud conversion !!

I personally like a biggish 5 spoke style of mag on the Mk2, as well as the Braid rims and I can't wait to see some pics once the guys get the Snyper rims on !!!

Michael nice rims. Can't wait to see those Gladiators on the car when it's done.

Some pics I've posted before on another thread. Work 16x7s +28 and 16x8s +4 for my 5 bolt conversion, but will be getting something in 18" or 19" diameter. Volk Racing GTCs, BBS LMs, Simmons FR19 and/or Simmons OM18.

I really like those Work wheels, Raj. Looking forward to seeing them fitted.

Will you have anything new for Toronto?

Chad

Probably not. So busy working now that school is over till the fall. I really want to get the rear 5 bolt conversion done and to finally get the Z32 brake upgrade done for the stock 4 bolt hubs. I explained my 5 bolt conversion to Dean and Bob, they both thought it was a possible solution.

I just picked up a new 7M-GTE from Vince. Really nice.

I will be at the meet on the Friday, but as usual working Saturday and Sunday.

Look forward to seeing you and everyone again.
