Dang, I think a set of caps before the paint process would have been sweet.
Kinda hard to tell by this pic though, because of the crack in the cap, and the scoring from the lug nut.

They were completely chrome plated before the sides were painted. I noticed a spec of plating in the paint, so started scraping on it...sure enough, there's plating under that paint.

Someone painted them then, they did not come that way, that or they were really dirty.......or I have mine shiny for so long that I do not remember paint.

I've owned three 83 Celica's an 85 Celica, and my Supra, and all the caps were painted. Although, I wasn't the first owner of any of them.

Orginally the area below the ridge is painted silver.

Are you talking clear-coat or silver paint came off that cap?

Is that the one that I sent you with the rim you bought?

If it is, then that was your basic stock Supra P-type cap.

Yes it was the one you sent. The silver paint did not come off easily, used a utility knife blade, and some cleaning chemical my wife uses called Awesome.
