Offset question...

In the FAQ area it lists the proper offset for 17" rims being 0-3mm. I called a couple places that carry Konig, Axis and the such. They dont carry anything close to that offset.

Is there anywhere that I can get a set of 16" or 17" wheels for $1000? I am looking for something like these:

They dont have to be that brand but that is the style I like (or similar). Can anyone point me in the right direction? I dont really want to break the bank. I am already doing that on the friggen engine.

Unfortunately their aren't too many off the shelf wheels for MkIIs anymore. Unfortunately most custom wheel are going to start in the $1600+ range. For wheels that might get you in the price/size range you are talking about you might want to make an inquiry into Centerline wheels. The thing to watch out with Centerline wheels is that they are billet wheels so they will bend like butter if you hit a decent sized pothole. You can also check out these guys;

they are pushing mid to high $200 range for 17x8, so you might overshoot the $1000 a smidge. You can also check out Panasports. You can get 16x7 fairly cheaply, and supposedly 16x8s are in the pipeline.

The panasports are not really appealing to me. The RZX might look ok. I'd ahve to see it on the car. Not really my first choice but it doesnt look like I have a whole lot of options.

Has anyone run spacers between the wheel and rotor?

I have been looking for aftermarket wheels for several years for our cars. Your choices are very limited. Probably the cheapest wheel you are going to find in the style you like, is the Braid Future GT. That is what I ended up buying. You can see a picture at

They are a custom 3-piece wheel and will probably run you $1600 - $2000 depending on sizes and options. For a similar style, you can step up in price to the Simmons wheels like Mr. Malloy, but plan to shell out well over $2000 for a set. The style you like is simply not available inexpensively in the proper size, lug pattern, and offset required for our cars. Sorry.

Ok, so I called Centrline and they can make any of their billet wheels fit our car (0-10mm offset).

Yup I just put a set of 806's 16x8 on my car. Needed longer wheel studs though and acorn type nuts but that was it. I have autocrossed on them and driven them at 120+ mph and have had no problems so far with them not being hub centric.

Hub Centric? What is that?

Hubcentric is basically when you center the wheel around the hubcenter and not with the lugs. Mk2s wheel from the factory are hubcentric. Its a good idea to keep the hubcentric from a strength point of view. Otherwise the lugs have to do the work of supporting the car weight and loading forces.

Being hubcentric will significantly reduce your chances of vibration given the wheel and tire are perfectly round and balanced to zero.

Being lugcentric, you run the chance of getting vibrations even if you torque the wheels in the air. First bump and the wheels will be offcenter, the lugs will bend or the lugs work themselves loose.

If your wheels are not bored specifically for your car, ask for centering rings. Most manufacturers have their "universal" center bore and offer centering rings to fit most cars including the mk2.

I have the MO road wheels in 17" 3mm offset. With shipping, cost was $1170. Just another brand you may want to consider, as they have several rims in 15, 16 and 17 inch with 0-3mm offsets...

These Konig Imagine wheels are available sort of... I found these for sale in a Z car catalog. They listed these as fitting 280ZX's so I called them for more info. They're selling the wheels with spacers to make them fit. If you're interested this setup should also work on the MK2, although I understand that the center bore is a bit different between the 280ZX and the MK2.
