Well, got two new rear tires...Just the rears because the fronts are just fine... Funny how that is...
Anyway, got two Toyo Proxes 4's in a 255/40ZR17. All I can say is !@#$%!@@!@#!!!!! So THAT'S what traction is! Wet traction is UNBELIEVABLE!! The K104's I had were alright, but I could (and did!!) break traction a lot(Drifting is bad! Ok kids?). NOT SO NOW! But that's what I'd expect for a 200 dollar tire...

Those shoulder block sipes have these gill looking linings which help hold the tread block together...or so I'm told. :)

Great tire! I just ordered a set for my daily driver. Its probably the best high performance all season out there.

Yeah, before boost, I must finish the suspension and get a V1 THEN IF I still have the right to drive, I'll do it 8)
Yeah, I'll see about the "M+S" this winter....I'm impressed though!

I'm kind of thinking of giving a new tire a try sooner rather than later, maybe I will research these a bit. I drove through some storms the other day, and hydroplaned quite easily on brand new 225/50/16 kumho 712s. Maybe it was more of a camber problem (eibachs, plus a bunch of shit in the hatch) than anything else, though. Either way it's really kind of scary

I've heard bad things about the kuhmo's where wet traction is concerned. These proxes are bad ass in the wet. I've been launching really hard the last few rainy days and no traction loss. No puddles yet, but we'll see those soon enough...

i read the Sport Compact Car writeup on those proxes4 and they said they were an ass kickin all round tire.
definitely on my list of tires when i go for bigger wheels.

I found it... April 2004 Rear drive WRX on cover (Hey, it was a hite AWD car...you were close :) ) Page 153 TOC says 179. Yay typos.

haha, go figure, i just read that one...
they do decent little writeups... lets you know how the tire will handle on a track, which is probably harder than 90% of drivers will ever use it.
got the new SCC yet? ;)

What are the spec's on the wheels your running? I know I can get those tires at Les Schwab but need some 17's...

Check out the FAQ. Under the Aftermarket wheel pic collaboration thread, there's info posted in there when I first got them.
But they are Simmons FR17's. 17x8, 17x9.

I was running the Pep Boys brand-Futura in the 225/50/16 with good results but it's only a R rated tire. I go back to cash in on the tread warranty and BAM they don't carry them anymore. They have the Hankooks now and they say they are the replacements. What do you guys think of them? The Futura's were inexpensive but had decent traction wet/dry and didn't make a lot of noise no matter how hard you got on them.

the tires I'm replacing are Hankoo Ventus Sport K104's. Good tire, not nearly as grippy as these Toyos, but they are also about half the price. I enjoyed them while they lasted. That neg camber eats em up. :(

just bought the same tires .. i do not have them on yet but when i do, i will give my 2 cents......i know that this tire is a very soft rubber.... the shop that sold them said that they would not give a whole lot of milage (15000 kms) depending on how hard you drive them, but he said that they should have superior traction

Silica tread compound. Quite sticky are they not? I mean just poking at them
The treadwear rating is, I think, 300. We'll see how well they hold up. I'm at 500 miles and counting!

300 treadwear?? That's more moderately hard/moderately soft. Unless you're pretty hard on your tires, these should last for awhile. Otherwise, these are not as soft as the Yokohama's that I have (both my stock wheel A509's & the AVS Intermediates on the Compomotives are 160's).

Well, in my case, traction equals longer tread life. :)
Well, I'm hoping they last a while. I really want to lower the rear of my car again, but I can't handle 3 degrees of camber back there. :crazyeye: 2 is plenty for wearing out tires. Too bad the rear is a greedy bastard, I wish it would share some neg camber with the front...
So how many miles does one get out of a 160 tread rating, Eng?

Well......
Most of the time, I wasn't driving around like a maniac w/ ants in his pants, and I somehow managed to get ~60K miles out of my first set of A509's. Finally changed them out last year......... to "another" used set of A509's that I picked up @ Nix99. 2 of the current tires have more tread on them than the other 2 & I have only put ~6K miles on these. More than likely, this set will last longer than the previous set, since for 6 months, I have the stock wheels on, the other 6 months, the Redpra is wearing the Compomotives. The AVS Intermediates only have about 15K miles on them.
The mileage that I got on the first set of A509's I've been told is a very oddball exception. Most peeps w/ A509's were getting about 30K - 40K miles, if not less.

Interesting... Well, I don't really like the idea of a number for treadwear. Too many varibles involved in actual treadwear. So we'll see how these Toyos and their "300" do. :)
