View Full Version : BFG 245/50/14's
Supra Bob 08-17-2004, 03:30 AM Just got them on Saturday... DAMN these babies are wide! They sit a little lower than the 225/235 combo I had, but it puts the height perfect for where I wanted it actually. And with the reduced tire size, its like I stuck a 4.50 rear in there :mk2vroom:
FWDsux 08-17-2004, 10:38 AM 4.56 actually. :P
They look good though, huh? I had forgot how burly they looked until Sunday when I saw Jamie's car again :)
BTW, this on a 5 speed or auto? I can imagine 1st gear in a 5 speed being even more useless with 4.56's.... an auto however... :D
Supra Bob 08-17-2004, 12:09 PM Its a Manual... First gear, if ya watch the tach and stomp the gas, its damn near like your free reving the motor...I'm gonna hafta switch to like a 3.90 after the turbo. Oddly though, in 5th gear, my speed vs RPM hasn't descreased much... maybe 2 or 3 MPH.
All in all, well worth it IMO. The extra grip from these wide ass tires is a definate boon. A ramp I normally start getting squirelly on at 60 I took at 65 without a single squeel last night...
lechner 08-17-2004, 01:08 PM How bout a picture of those tires on the car....
Tommy 08-17-2004, 08:47 PM I'm glad you like 'em Bob,... When I have my 4.30s in the diff, the 2.45:1 low gear in an auto car comes alive!! With the low ass manual 1st I am sure it's over in a hurry.
Try some 4.10s! :) It's hard for some folks to believe but they definately are sticky in the twisties!
Jamie
Brian Gillespie 08-19-2004, 02:28 AM How do the 245\50\14's do in the rain???
I recently returned to portland OR and it drizzles alot!!!!!! out here.
I don't like the stock -skinny 225's.
I want sone 16's.....but I think a turbo or v-8 engine are my next priorities.
Tanks
Brian
Supra Bob 08-19-2004, 03:20 AM I'll let ya know after it rains ;)
Tommy 08-25-2004, 03:28 PM How bout a picture of those tires on the car....

Ihth,
Jamie
Supra Bob 08-26-2004, 01:02 PM Oh... and they are pertty good in the rain too.
Tanya 08-26-2004, 05:00 PM No offense Jamie, but it'd be cool if we could get more angles on those tires on your car, or on anyone elses car. Like a dead on front shot, dead on rear shot, etc.
Them are some expensive ass tires. I have new tires on my car right now but MY GOD, I have already ran over a nail in a front tire and a screw in a rear tire (which is one month old)...I dunno if it's a good idea for me to invest in expensive tires...I keep running over crap!
(feels my wheels are somehow magnetic to sharp objects)
Supra Bob 08-27-2004, 01:32 PM $83 a tire is expensive?? That included mounting, balancing, and all the other 8000 costs they seem to throw in on ya.
So I guess you would faint if I told ya in the spring I was gonna pay $156 a piece for new Drag Radials.. LOL!
Seriously tho, for the quality of the tire, $83 isn't bad...
Donn29 08-27-2004, 04:28 PM thats about the price i got for 225s at a local place. ok price i guess.
Also i find/have heard that wider tires are not as good is snow/rain, as the tire hyrdoplanes(floats on water) more easily. just like a plane with wider wings. on my dd i went from 155/80R13 to 175/75R13 and i cant do burnouts any more and ive noticed that threshold braking has to be done a lot sooner.
not sure how ppl knew wider=bad in rain
ive heard on here(i think) ppl running 195's in the winter. true??
dogstar 08-27-2004, 10:06 PM hahaha, depends how you drive. i ran 245s all through last winter and i think an alberta winter is usually way more snowy and icy than an ontario winter.
nothing wrong with wider tires, as long as they have good tread depth, you do need to drive sensibly though, our cars dont have abs, or traction control or any of the other idiot proofing systems out there, so you have to actually know how to drive in winter.
oh, and this year ive got a pair of 195 artic alpins to try out, no idea how theyll work, but should be ok.
Tanya 08-27-2004, 10:13 PM $$$83????
WTF~!
I got ripped! Man they want $120 a tire down here! I'm not joking, I'm serious
I wish I could get those for $83

well im talking more about rain, where hydroplning really happens without pushing the tires hard(conering/braking)
also theres no idiot proofing on my car. you dont get that for $10K CAD New
RedP85 08-28-2004, 12:10 AM Oddly though, in 5th gear, my speed vs RPM hasn't descreased much... maybe 2 or 3 MPH.Sorry to disappoint you, but the relation speed vs tach will not change unless you changed the gear in the tranny....You could rev the engine without a driving shaft, and in 5th, you will still read the same speed !
Donn29 08-28-2004, 02:13 AM but it was only a few rpms off.... eh thought somone would say something. i hate when someone makes a math/physics error like that, and no one corrects it.....
but they are easily confusing things thats for sure :silly:

Sorry to dissapoint you, but the effective gear ratio i have now is a 4.56, and I was clocking myself with a radar gun... So yeah, the speed vs RPM will change...
Donn29 08-28-2004, 01:51 PM oops we forgot that every supra bob has a radar gun. damn it, memory like a rock i tell ya
RedP85 08-28-2004, 09:44 PM No, we are both right !
I am right saying that the instrument cluster reading will not be affected (and not showing the actual speed).
He is right saying that the REAL speed of the car will change.
The only thing is that it is not convenient (sp?) to drive with a radar gun to establish the speed were doing. For sure it's a fixed ratio, and can valuate from it.
Like I have a W58 and a 4.10 -should be 4.30. I know that for evey 20 kph, I am 1 higher (21).

ok, so dont push the car hard when theres that much rain, duh.
even goodyear F1 rain tires dont let the drivers push the cars limits, so why would you expect low to moderately priced tires to let you do it?
Tanya 08-29-2004, 12:08 PM  I don't get why Florida, or at least south FL, has high tire prices like this. We had to go get a tire yesterday for the Yota PU, and the shop was closing. They had moved a rack of tires into the bay when I spotted the name "BFGoodrich Radial T/A" ...all I could see what the side of the tire, but loooked like a 14" to me, so I had the hubby go over and confirm the size tire.
It was a 225/60/14....on SALE for $72 a piece :?
The few shops in Naples that even list the 245/50/14s want $120, which I think is rediculous for like a 112mph rated tire I believe? I dunno, but I must live in the worst tire city
:x
dogstar 08-29-2004, 03:15 PM theres your problem... "the few shops which even list the bfg 245..."
the less choices you have, the more your going to have to pay in most cases, unfortunately.
im not sure how close you are to any bigger cities, but perhaps by driving a little bit you can save a considerable amount of money?
or just call around to tire shops in bigger cities and see what kind of prices you can get, especially at chains that might have a location near you, where you might be able to get them sent to the closer location for cheap or free.
just a couple thoughts.
Tanya 08-31-2004, 02:36 PM That's true too, but I'm about 90 miles from Miami, 45 miles from Ft. Myers. I will check around on their prices, thanks
Tanya,
You can always check the Tire Rack and see what it would cost to have them shipped to a shop that will throw them on for you. A thought anyway...
Eric
Supra Bob 09-03-2004, 11:18 AM Tirerack lists them for ~$90 a piece, plus shipping... and they will also ship to your door if you so desire. Got my last set of Yokohama's from them.
FWDsux 09-03-2004, 01:15 PM I just realized I had this pic. It's of WadeT's 85 with 245/50-14's...being relevant to this thread, here it is! :)
It is a little blurry....my camera owns me sometimes :(

Kevin Kisseberth 09-17-2004, 02:44 AM beautiful car. I will change tires soon $90 a piece isnt bad compared to $326 a piece now I pay for eagle F1s 275/40/17. Any wheel company out there want to make some money make our stock wheels in a 16 or 17 inch version. I love these wheels
Donn29 09-17-2004, 05:39 PM what about the 15X7 stock wheels, there in the faq or differnce between l/p types post? i wouldnt mind a set or 2 of them...
FWDsux 09-17-2004, 07:28 PM They are 15x6 actually and that's NARROW for our cars. Like scary narrow.... IMO
CJSREDPRA 09-19-2004, 03:57 PM And the +20mm offset will make the P-Type flares stick out way too far.
